Florida Power and Light Control System Design

As part of its Riviera Beach Next Generation Clean Energy Center, Florida Power and Light needed a new control system package to improve the efficiency and reduce emissions from its Riviera Lateral Pipeline and Compressor Station in Palm Beach County, Florida.

For the project, MES’s services included control system design, PLC programming, operator interface programming, component procurement, fabrication of multiple PLC panels, quality control and quality assurance procedures, factory acceptance testing, and unit startup and commissioning.

The new facility generates up to 1,250 megawatts of electricity, or enough to power roughly 250,000 homes and businesses.

Florida Power & Light Company, one of the nation’s largest electric utilities, serves approximately 4.6 million homes and businesses via 70,000 miles of power lines in about half the state of Florida. FPL investments since 2001 have improved fuel efficiency at its plants by 19 percent. The utility’s plants are now more than 22 percent more efficient than the fossil industry average in 2010.
